Hunting

Most hunting from the Leaf River Lodge is done for caribou which are plentiful in Nunavik and offer world-class trophies.  In addition, there is good hunting for the large black bears that inhabit the Leaf River valley, and limited hunting for musk ox.

Our hunting for caribou is done by cruising the Leaf River in outboard-motor-driven freighter canoes. Once caribou are spotted hunters are dropped off on shore for the stalk.

From December 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011 there will be a one-time only, experimental muskox hunt as part of a study of the health of the large musk ox herd of Nunavik. This is a unique opportunity for hunters to experience the thrill of a winter hunt and to collect a unique trophy. The musk ox is a remnant of the Pleistocene that, unlike the woolly mammoth, survives in certain limited areas of the Arctic. Accommodations for hunters will be provided in the village of Tasiujaq. The musk oxen are easily found in winter by daily skidoo excursions out of the village.

Willow and rock ptarmigan, both of which are found here, offer superb wing shooting in the fall and through the winter and spring.

In the winter ptarmigan take on their white plumage and leave the tundra to collect in large flocks in the Leaf River Valley, offering unparalleled wing-shooting opportunities.
